Owner, Smith's Gardentown
Katherine grew up working in the nursery that was founded by her grandfather, father and uncle. She attended Rice University and received a BS in Radio-TV News from the University of Texas. After graduating, she spent her 20’s working as a television reporter in Houston and Phoenix, where she specialized in covering high-profile court cases, including the Houston Mass Murders, the Blood and Money case and the Halloween poisoning case. In her 30’s, she operated riding stables, guiding trail rides in the Arizona desert and in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. In her 40’s, she returned to Texas to work at the family garden center with her two brothers, while she raised three sons.
Katherine loves to travel and has been as far as Japan and Hong Kong, Europe, Russia and many places in Central and South America. Many of her trips involve birding in remote reaches of the Amazon and all over North America.
At the first of the year, Katherine became the sole owner of Smith’s Gardentown, including its stone yard and a Wild Birds Unlimited franchise store-within-a-store.
