Session: Growing The Family Business: Expansion And Innovation At Gullo’s Garden Center
Think with your head, not your heart. Do a thorough analysis of the market you’re in and ask yourself if it is underserved and if the demand is there to warrant expanding your business. If it is not, ask what your strategy will be to attract new customers from outside of your market (think “destination garden center”) and/or customers from your competition. The last two years have been a windfall for our industry; the pandemic limited our competition for consumer’s discretionary spending. There was also a massive amount of money pumped into the economy by the federal government. These two factors are no longer in place, so keep that in mind when you do your analysis. We all love our businesses, and for many of us, they define who we are, so it can be difficult to apply a rational basis in making decisions. Make sure the fundamentals and data make sense.
Growing your own plants gives you a massive marketplace advantage. Chief among them are availability, quality control and cost of goods. Instead of competing with others for limited supplies, not always being sure of quality and paying a premium, you are in control.
